Learn about all of your favorite animals as you uncover hundreds of creatures from around the world as you wander through the park. Sit back and enjoy Do You Zoo?, an educational and entertaining animal game show.  Then travel half-way around the world on our Safari Train ride – an adventure that brings you face to face with rare Indian rhinos, giraffes, elephants, zebras, wildebeests and more!  The discoveries are endless at Wild Adventures.

Youth and Children’s Pottery Camps!

Children’s Camp:  $75     9:00am-noon each week

LAST WEEK of summer (July 23-26) for teens only!  M-TH cost: $40

9am-Noon each day:   Children’s Pottery Camp is kiln-loads of fun for children who have completed kindergarten-fifth grade!  Children may be dropped off at Bright Star United Methodist Church, or a parent/guardian may stay to watch the child during class.  Each week consists of daily experience on the potter’s wheel, hand building with clay, glazing, painting and firing items made by the children.  Each day is filled with individual instruction, learning about clay, exciting stories, Bible time, snacks and fun!  Beginners welcome!  Cost: $75 per week

1pm-3pm each day: Youth Pottery Camp is a great way for youth/teens (completed grades 6-12) to spend summer afternoons!  Get creative, learn all about pottery, make new friends!  You will learn to use the potter’s wheel, and you will have daily opportunities to practice…plus individual instruction on the wheel!  You will also create your own pieces as you learn to mold and build clay by hand! Have you ever seen a kiln? Know how it works? How hot it gets?  Come join us this summer and you’ll learn all about it!  Devotions each day!          Cost: $50 per week

Pick up dates for projects made during camp will be 7-10 days after the end date of each week when camp is finished (due to firing process).  All projects must be picked up by August 15, 2012.

Atlanta History Center

The Atlanta History Center offers special monthly programs for homeschool students and their families. Each month explores a different subject through exhibition tours and a variety of activities for kids from toddler to teen. Immerse your child in a special day of hands-on learning adventures during Fernbank’s Homeschool Day.

Choose from four educator-led programs, designed for different grade levels: Forest Explorers, Chemistry Investigations, Geology Rocks! and Life Cycles: From Seeds to Salamanders. You can also enjoy a chance to socialize with other homeschool parents, experience the award-winning special exhibition Fernbank NatureQuest, or see an IMAX® film (additional ticket).

Program Options

Forest Explorers*
Grades 3-5 at 1pm
Grades 6-8 at 2pm
The successive forest on Fernbank Museum’s campus provides an infinite adventure into the environment. Get up close and personal with our wild backyard as you develop scientific observation and reporting skills in our outdoor natural classroom.

Chemistry Investigations
Grades 3-5 at 2pm
Grades 6-8 at 1pm
Explore the exciting world of chemistry as you mix up some creative concoctions. From amazing demonstrations to ooey-gooey experiments, learn about chemistry through fun hands-on activities.

Geology Rocks!
Grades K-2 at 1pm
Learn why geology rocks through hands-on activities, games and song! Find out what makes a mineral, the basic type of rock, and how the rock cycle works. Discover a variety of rocks, including some you might find in your own backyard, and explore the unusual physical properties of several different minerals.

Life Cycles: From Seeds to Salamanders
Grades K-2 at 2pm
Did you know some animals can lay thousands of eggs at one time? And that a Kiwi lays an egg ¼ the weight of its own body? Find out more amazing facts as we explore the life cycles of a variety of plants and animals during this interactive class.

Networking Lounge
11:30am – 1pm
Enjoy lunch with other Homeschool Day guests in the Conference Room (located on Upper Level).  Bring your own lunch or purchase something from The Fernbank Café. This is a great opportunity to meet and share ideas with other homeschool parents.

Self-Guided Museum Tours
10am – 5pm
Explore the Museum at your own pace. Come face-to-face with the world’s largest dinosaurs, explore the development of life on Earth through the landscapes of present-day Georgia, connect with cultures from around the globe, engage in a variety of hands-on exhibitions and more!

Films in the IMAX® Theatre
Choose from two educational and entertaining films: To The Arctic and Born to Be Wild. (Requires a separate ticket purchase.)

*Participants are encouraged to wear weather-appropriate clothing and are required to wear closed-toe footwear. This program requires a moderate level of fitness, including standing on and walking over uneven terrain. Please review the additional tips for this outdoor program.

Saturday, May 12: Book Sale at the Dog River Library 10 am- 4 pm in the library conference room. Hardbacks $1.00-$3.00; Paperbacks .50 cents- $1.00. The Friends will be collecting books for the sale at the during County Government Day at Arbor Place Mall on Saturday, May 5 from10-2.
